Norfolk/Virginia Beach to Nags Head route

What is the best route to take from Norfolk/Virginia Beach area to South Nags Head on a Sat. in July. We can't check in until 4 and will have 3 young ones with us. Also looking for a good grocery store. Is it better to stock up in Virginia Beach or wait!!!! Thanks so much we can't wait to get there.

From the oceanfront in Virginia Beach:

Drive onto I-264 W (signs for Interstate 264 W/Norfolk) 12.1 mi

Take the Interstate 64 E exit on the left toward Chesapeake/Suffolk 0.4 mi

Merge onto I-64 E 7.5 mi

Take exit 291B to merge onto I-464 S/VA-168 S toward US-17 S/Elizabeth City/Outer Banks 0.4 mi

Continue onto VA-168 S

Partial toll road

Entering North Carolina 16.1 mi

VA-168 S turns slightly left and becomes NC-168 S/Caratoke Hwy

Continue to follow Caratoke Hwy 43.0 mi

Continue onto US-158 E/Wright Memorial Bridge into the OBX area

Saturday is the busiest turnover day so it is suggested you plan to cross the Wright Memorial Bridge by 10 AM to avoid standstill traffic.

You may want to bring grocery staples with you and then wait to pick up perishables when you get there. Many choices of stores to choose from. Food Lion and Walmart right over the bridge. K Mart Kill Devil Hills.

Assorted smaller stores all up and down Croatan Hywy.

This s not the best route but a fun one Go to Knots Island and take the ferry across we go this way when we spend a night in Va beach you will need to check ferry times .

Plenty of Grocery store on the Outer Banks. They are normally packed Saturday and Sunday afternoons so expect it.

People that say you can't check in until 4pm don't always understand that is not true. Many rental companies guarantee 4pm check-in but you can often get keys before that when the house is cleaned and ready. The last thing a rental company wants is for 250 people to all show up a 3:50 looking for keys. We would rather spread that out from noon to 4pm and we do at our company. I suggest you call yours and ask. You will likely be asked to call in Saturday and give them your cell number so they can call you when keys are ready.

What time could you leave Virginia? If you could be at the bridge to Kitty Hawk by 11-12noon you probably will be ok with just some slow traffic at times. After 1pm and it can turn into a parking lot from Grandy south. Once over the bridge and past Home Depot the 5 lanes open up and move well.

There is a Harris Teeter in Nags Head.

Yes, as fishoinc suggested, definitely consider the Knotts Island route! We did this many times when our son was little. A fun and different way to start your vacation.

Agree with the Harris Teeter. By far nicest grocery store in the area IMO. For our stock-up last year, we first went to Food Lion, then ended up at HT after FL was sold out of a lot of stuff we needed.
