Where to stay?

I've been combing this forum for information as we are already planning our vacation for next summer. We are an active couple in our mid 50's, traveling with friends, and this will be our first visit. We will be looking to rent a 2-3 bedroom small house or condo, and can't decide which community is the right fit. We want to be close to the beach, but don't necessarily have to be right on it. We don't want to drive a great distance to go out to dinner, and we are kind of picky when it comes to food. We would like to be fairly centrally located, so we can go in all directions to explore. We also would love to have a "village" community close by for shopping, in case of inclement weather. We will be going mid July, so know it will be busy no matter where we choose. Any suggestions? Many thanks!

I think centrally located + village + good restaurants sounds like Duck would be a good fit, though all areas of the Outer Banks have their own charm.

I vote for south Nags Head, somewhere off Old Oregon Inlet Road. Very centrally located, you can get to Manteo in ten min, get to Bodie Island light in five minutes, easy drive to northern villages, about thirty min drive to trio villages of Rodanthe, Waves and Salvo, about an hour to Hatteras village and the light house, you can take a day trip to Ocracoke. Houses on the West side of Old Oregon Inlet road are very short walk to beach, one hundred yards or less, and usually rents are less. Be sure to explore Manteo and go see The Lost Colony, it is only put on during the summer.

Every area has pros and cons, it will be interesting to see others opinions.

I agree with Joy, and you will be closest to the majority of restaurants.

Duck fits with the village part, but there are only a couple condos there if you want one of those. Nags Head has many more condos and lots of food choices and is centrally located.
