Where to stay? crowds?

We are thinking about traveling to this area in June...middle to late June, not sure on exact dates. Is it safe to assume this beats the summer crowds? Any suggestions on where to stay? We're looking for more of a condo type rental that's right on the ocean/beach and has a pool. I know nothing about this area, but have just ordered travel guides. Is there a lot of things in the area to do besides the beach?

It will not be terribly crowded in mid-June. I would suggest a condo in Kill Devil Hills or Nags Head. It is a very central area and has the most restaurants and other activities. There is plenty to do, depending on what you are interested in. History lovers can visit Fort Raleigh to learn about the Lost Colony, the Wright Brothers Memorial where the first flight took place, several light houses and the Whalehead Club in Corolla. Jockey's Ridge is a giant sand dune that is fun for everyone and offers great views. If you like to be active, you can do everything from surf lessons to parasailing, hang gliding and even a jet pack. Look up Kitty Hawk Kites - they cover just about everything.

Oceanfront condos include Croatan Surf Club, First Flight Retreat, Crystal Shores, The Quay, The Oceans, Heron Cove. They all have different amenities but they are some of the nicer ones in the area and all have pools. They also have kitchen so you can save money by cooking your self, but be sure to visit a few of our local restaurants!

Many rental houses in the area turn over on Saturdays, so of you can arrive on another day you will miss the busiest traffic day. Things to do: go to The Lost Colony outdoor play at the historic Waterside Theater on Roanoke Island. thelostcolony.org this year their season starts may 30.

A day trip to Ocracoke island is fun, dive to Hatteras village and get on the free ferry to Ocracoke then walk around the village, go to the beautiful beaches there, go to Albert Styron's store and get some fig preserves to take home, visit the historic sites. Www.ocracokevillage.com

Hatteras village has the Graveyard of the Atlantic museum, its free. They have a Facebook page www.Facebook.com/GraveyardoftheAtlanticMuseum

Drive south across the Bonner Bridge over Oregon Inlet and visit the Pea Island Visitor Center www.fws.com/peaisland/public.html

you can also check put the national Wildlife Refuges Visitor Center on roanoke island www.fws.gov/ncgatewayvc/

June, even on a Saturday is not bad at all as far as crowds and traffic go. Towards the end of the month will be when it starts getting more and more crowded. Often June can be warm to almost hot and the water can be very nice, but some years it can still be quite cool in the water.

I can't think of many condos that do not have a pool, most do. Good luck finding something to rent. The longer you wait to reserve something the harder it gets.
