recommend restaurants & activities in Ocracoke & Nags Head?

hi all, In June '14, My husband, son, and I will be spending 3 nights in Ocracoke and 1 night in Nags Head.

In Ocracoke we're renting a cottage that has Sound access and a canoe. We'll also rent bikes.

In Nags Head we're staying at Surf Side Hotel.

Can anyone recommend some restaurants in Ocracoke and Nags Head? We prefer mid-range, casual seafood.

What are some "do not miss" activities? My husband and son aren't the sit-on-the-beach types so we stay active. We are early risers so will try to catch some sunrises, as well as sunsets.

thanks for the help.

In Nags Head, possibilities are Sam and Omies, Basnights Lone Cedar Cafe, Owens, and Tortugas Lie.

On your drive north from Ocracoke stop by the Pea Island National Park Service visitor center. Another place you might like is Bodie Island Light house in southern part of Nags Head, you can sign up to climb the lighthouse on escorted ranger tours.

Not many restaurant I wouldn't recommend on Ocracoke, Howard's is the most popular, Gaffers is a good place to watch games at. Dajio is good and has entertainment , Jolly Rodgers is a good one for sun set and on the water too. If you into beer and wine stop by zillies on the back road. They have an extended collection of beer from all over, and farther down the road you will find the Flying Mellon .

We will be there too that week , Enjoy your stay .

Tortuga's

Blue Moon

Kill Devil Grill

Jason's is a very good casual restaurant. Their fish sandwiches and pizzas are the best on the island, IMHO.

Thai Moon, a takeout, has delicious Thai food. When they say "spicy," they mean it! I usually always eat seafood when I'm at the coast, but I make an exception with them. Yum!

Ditto on the iconic Howard's from Fish_oinc above. Good margaritas.

I am not always impressed with Dajio's for dinner. I have found them inconsistent. On the other hand, their breakfasts are truly wonderful--the best on the island, IMO.

If you love biscuits, then make the Pony Island Restaurant one of your breakfast destinations. They get you in and out quickly and they have friendly service to boot!

Jolly Roger serves up great sunsets for dinner. You can't miss with the fried fresh catch of the day there.

As far as activities, you are doing two of my favorite things--paddling and bicycling. You can bicycle to the boat ramp near the ferry in the village and catch a sunset over there--there are picnic tables to sit on. Another good place to catch a great sunset is Springer's Point. You can bicycle over there, take the short walk through the woods, and you end up on a small sound side beach. It's lovely. Bring bug spray for the walk through the woods.

You can catch some great sunrises in your canoe. You can also drive over to the beach and catch a good sunrise. It would be worth getting up early to do one of those.

If you enjoy music, then check out Molasses Creek.

Have a great trip!

If you visit Alligator Refuge in the sunrise/sunset time frame and drive around you should be able to see some bears. It is about a 20 minute drive from Nags Head. There are kayak guide trips that go over there too. Mid range seafood restaurants are Blue Moon, Tortugas, Sam and Omies. Darrell's is really affordable local seafood on Roanoke Island, opening in Nags Head. Some of the restaurants mentioned above are $20+ entrees, but also good. There are some fun things to do in Manteo/ Roanoke Island like walking the Elizabethan Gardens, walking and shopping in Manteo, the history museum in Manteo, the aquarium and the Lost Colony. The Nature Conservancy has a nice hiking area on the sound in Nags Head.
