Tongariro Crossing - Am I fit enough?

I'm coming to New Zealand in March and I'm interested in doing the Tongariro crossing. Everything I've read says you need a "reasonable" level of fitness. I'm just wondering what this means?

I'd like to think that I'm reasonably fit but that probably depends on who I'm being compared to. I go to the gym 4-5 times a week to do cardio and 1 session with my PT. But I'm (technically) overweight at size 14. Someone looking at me probably wouldn't think I was very fit but I do enjoy hiking at home and I love to include some hikes anytime I go on holiday.

I've heard that parts of the crossing are quite challenging. I really want to give this a go but I don't want to go with a group and end up slowing everyone down. I've recently lost a bit of weight and I'm going to try before I leave to lose a bit more but I'm not expecting any miracles.

Any advice?

I have read so many different information regarding this crossing. It's confusing... ;-) I am so excited to go to New Zealand and my husband is definitely doing the Tongariro crossing. When I arrive there I will be 16 weeks pregnant and I am not sure if I should do it. I am healthy, fairly fit, have done a few hikes before, but I'm afraid it is too risky due to my pregnancy. Do you think I should be ok, or should I forget about it? I am sad not to do it, because it is the first time I'll be in New Zealand and it might be the only time.

I certainly wouldn't risk it at 6 months - 4-5 might be OK if you are VERY fit. This is a serious alpine crossing - even though it is not a mountain CLIMB, it is also not a Chinese mountain with granite steps and a cable car.
