belize - would this work

Arrive Belize City - straight to The Lodge @ Chaa Creek - San Ignacio for 3 nights - fly to Ambergis - which is better place to stay Phoenix Resort in San Pedro or Tranquility Bay?? then over to Hopkins (can you fly from Ambergis Cay to Hopkins? stay at Hamanasi Adventure and Dive - we have 16 nights in Belize.

Family of 4 - girls aged 11 & 14

Any advice?

The Phoenix and Tranquility Bay are so different that it's hard to compare. The Phoenix is a beautiful high end condo property, with lovely pools and great management. It's right in San Pedro. No real beach to speak of, there's a sea wall in front of the property. Very close to dining, shopping, people watching, grocery stores.

Tranquility Bay is something like 16 miles north of San Pedro. So far north, the water taxi doesn't go that far. The reef meets the shoreline near there, so you can easily swim to the reef and snorkel. Nice stretch of beach. Nice property, more modest than the Phoenix.

So, it depends on what type of place you're looking for.

To get to Hopkins, you would fly from Ambergris to the Municipal airstrip in Belize City, then to Dangriga. Cab from there to Hopkins, or Hamanasi would probably come and get you.

Definitely spend the most time in Cayo, where you'll have scores of activities to choose from. There are also a lot of free activities at Chaa Creek.

I'd spend more time in the Cayo, too, and at least 1 night in Guatemala to visit Tikal. Try to arrange a tour with Roxy Ortiz - she's awesome and kids love her.

The reef is really a pretty loooong boat trip from the mainland. If you're only planning to dive for part of your trip, I'd choose to do it from Ambergris where you spend far less time coming and going.

I've pasted my favorite Belize links below - lots for kids to enjoy! Since we usually choose midrange lodging options, they might not be what you're looking for but they're all wonderful and great value. Happy planning!
