From Allegro Papagayo, the Tenorio National Park is approximately 2 hours and 15 minutes.

For transportation, it's better to rent a car. Head for Liberia and go south on the PanAmerican Highway until you see signs for Upala, Route 6. Turn left here. Follow this road about 35 km until you reach the town of Bijagua. About 3 miles past Bijagua is the entrance to the National Park.

On the way there, you can make a stop at Llanos del Cortes waterfall or have a rafting trip on the Rio Corobici or stop in Bijagua and check out the butterfly farm or Heliconias Lodge rainforest and have something to eat.

You can also arrange a private driver. Don't bother with a taxi - this would be the worst way to get there.

You can also walk the trails of Heliconias Lodge where they have their own rainforest and trails. You can even climb to the extinct cone of the volcano where there is a small lake, a cloud forest and a good chance of seeing a tapir.

Parque Tenorio is easy to find as is the Heliconias Lodge in Bijaqua. The sign into Parque Tenorio though is only visible if traveling northbound on the highway so if you find yourself in the town of Bijaqua you will need to turn around and try again.

Heliconias Lodge is half the cost of La Carolina and they have a guide, Jorge who is excellent at leading tours in Tenorio and also can provide horses for going from Heliconias to Tenorio.

In either case I would travel with mosquito netting as they are not provided and are really necessary if you want to avoid getting bitten while sleeping.

Sorry - so not true! To get to the Tenorio National Park main headquarters, you will take the highway Rt 6 north from Bijagua. It is about 4 miles to the road that takes you to the park and there are signs there, including a sign for the Park and signs of hotels. Turn right and follow the rocky road to the headquarters, about 12 km.

I am sure that elkhornsun just got things a little mixed up.

My favorite place to stay in the Bijagua/Tenorio area is Casitas Tenorio - www.casitastenorio.com They can arrange tours with their guide Donald and also horses. Donald is very knowledgeable and experienced. The Jorge mentioned by elkhornsun is his cousin and is also an excellent guide. They are both really good with birds.
