Is great snorkeling within driving distance of the Hilton?

Hi all!

I'm looking for some local advice on snorkeling! We are headed to the Hilton Papagayo tomorrow for the next 5 nights and we are trying to figure out if we should bring our snorkeling gear (masks and fins). We realize the Hilton offers complimentary gear for guests, but they have a time limit we can use theirs, so we wouldn't be able to take it off the property. I've read that the Hilton's beach isn't outstanding and that there isn't much to see in the bay. Understandable.

Since we have a rental car, we were wondering if there was a beach nearby we could drive to and have better snorkeling? Is it even worth packing our heavy/large fins? There is so much else to do in Costa Rica (we plan on hiking, mountain biking, ziplining, horseback riding to hot springs, etc) we can't decide.

Also, we do plan to drive down to Coco and Tamarindo beaches to see the white sand and my partner would like to try out surfing lessons at Tamarindo beach one day as well. But I assume if the beaches are great for surfing, they aren't as great for snorkeling, is that true?

Thanks everyone!

That's true. The northern pacific coast is not particularly good for snorkeling. There are some boat trips out of Tamarindo that combine a day on the water with some snorkeling at off-shore spots and that's probably your best bet. See some options at http://xplorecostarica.com/

We often bring our snorkels and rent fins locally. The snorkel and mask take up a lot less room than the fins and that way you'll know you have a mask that fits.

Agree with CRFAN...no good snorkeling around Hitlon...when I was a kid many moons ago we used to palya and try some snorkeling around Nacascolo...and since you have a car maybe you can drive there is where the Four Seasons is located...nice sand good clear water most of the time!

good decision,

there is a diving company Rich Coast, in Coco, they can take you on a snorkel trip

as roadadvisor mentioned, the beaches around 4 Seasons are nice for that,

Tamarindo for surfing is fun , so enjoy,

if you have an afternoon with no plans, take a trip to Rincon de la Vieja Volcano NP, the volcano is active but yet is safe to explore,

Jose makes a good point about Rincon De la Vieja, just beware that they are closed on Mondays, so just giving you a quick heads up!

Since you are a 1 hr plus drive to Tamarindo going there for snorkeling does not make much sense when you can snorkel 10 minutes from the Hilton. The hotel offers snorkeling tours as does a number of sailing snorkeling companies in the area as Marlin Del Ray or Seabird. These local tours take you to great snorkeling sites 10 - 20 minutes from the Hilton
