My husband and I are planning a trip to Costa Rica and would like to stay in a very nice hotel with ammenities. I am very picky on cleanliness. We want to relax during the day, have spa treatments and shop. In the evening we want to go out to eat and go to night clubs. which area would cover both things for us?

I vote for Tamarindo. Excellent choice of upscale lodging, all the amenities you list and more than 60 restaurants to choose from as well as nightlife. You can read more here: www.nicoyapeninsula.com and here: anywherecostarica.com/destinations/tamarindo…

If you are planning to go to Tamarindo, plan on flying into LIR Liberia. It's just under 2 hours from the airport to Tamarindo but from SJO San Jose, it's 5 hours. You can also get a domestic flight into Tamarindo from SJO.

In a word, no.

Compared to the totality of what Costa Rica has to offer, San Jose is barely an after-thought. Really not worth bothering with unless you're already there for a specific reason and have time to fill.

The city of San Jose is certainly not one of the most attractive cities in Central America but the Central Valley surrounding San Jose has some gorgeous boutique inns (Xandari, Finca Rosa Blanca, Vista del Valle, El Silencio Lodge) and there is plenty to do to keep you busy for a couple of days if flying into SJO is easier. (Poas volcano, Doka Coffee Estate, LaPaz waterfall gardens and more) Just remember it's a long 5 hour drive from San Jose to Tamarindo.

After several years in the wedding industry we can tell you thar for a romantic destinations we have Manuel Antonio and Tamarindo as the most amazing and exclusive beach destinations to visit in Costa Rica. For a romantinc trip please stay out of San Jose!!! Our recommendation in few words:

1. Tamarindo

2. Manuel Antonio
