Bicycle rentals and routes in or near Roussilon?

We will be arriving for a couple of nights in June in Roussilon after three days of cycling on rental bikes in St. Remy de Provence area. As we then have to leave to catch a mid-day plane in Nice, we thought, instead of having to return bikes to St. Remy de Provence, it would be best to rent bicycles in the Luberon. Is it possible to rent fairly good bikes with helmets and good locks in the Roussilon/Gordes area? Any advice on great routes for moderate cycling? We don't mind walking up some very steep hills.

Many thanks,

Diane and Paul

google found me this site

provence-a-velo.fr/accueil/organiser-son-sej…

Okhra is based in Roussillon. No idea if they are any good, the only cycling I do is in one place at the gym ; )

Roussillon is on a hill, and in fact the Luberon is sort of a long narrow valley with hills either side. That said I've walked to Roussillon from the main road on two visits and it is not that steep. I'd guess if you hire bikes, they'll be able to advise you on good tracks. But the above site also has loads of info if you can read French.

There is a bike route (easy) that runs through the middle of the valley on the old rail bed. You could cycle down from Roussillon and pick up the veloroute near Le Pont Julien with a choice to go then in either direction. It could be fun to head east and maybe stop in Apt for lunch on the way back.

You can find details of La Véloroute voie verte du Calavon (Green Way of Calavon) on the website that's already been posted. …veloloisirluberon.com/La-Veloroute-voie-ver… It's 28 kilometers total, with very little elevation change. (However cycling back up to Roussillon would give you a different experience.)

We had a chance to try out the electric bikes in Bonnieux last year, and it was fun... much different than I expected. These aren't motorized bicycles. When you pedal, the electric motor kicks in to help you... you still have to pedal up the hill, but you likely won't sweat or need to walk the bike. They told us that you could even cycle up to the Foret de Cedres, which would be a challenging climb for many people. There are stations in various places where you can pick up a charged battery. Their rental office in Bonnieux is around the side of the village, past the pharmacy, and they're actually open during the week now.

Here is a link to the Velo Loisir in Luberon route:

http://eng.veloloisirluberon.com/

This is the loop route around the Luberon mountains. The route runs along the mid-level of the hills. Once you get up to the route it isn't too bad. It is a bit difficult getting up to the route from the lower valley. But since you would be starting at Rousillon (and fresh?) a ride up to Bonnieux & then to the west towards Lacoste would be good, and then a return along the path along the previous railroad route:

This is the route along the previous railroad route:
