Walk from Montalcino to San Quirico D’Oricia

Has anyone done the walk from Montalcino to San Quirico D'Oricia? Or any other trails/hikes from Montalcino?

No, we've never done that exactly but we've hiked all over the area in other directions. Montalcino to Buonconvento (and back) is a great walk with various routes. Montalcino to Sant'Antimo (and back) is another or continue on to Sant Angelo in Colle and bus back if possible. It's great walking territory though you'd need a good map as few trails are marked clearly if at all. Even better walking (arguably) out of San Quirico itself especially heading north towards Torrenieri / Corsona / Lucignano d'Asso or over towards Pienza (that's a gorgeous walk and one we've done dozens of times taking different paths). Excellent walking maps are available locally; the best place to pick them up is from the Edicola in Pienza on the square by the public gardens.

Would we be able to get walking maps somewhere in Montepulchiano? We are staying 4 nights at the Agriturismo Le Caggiole and will go on drives, but would love to take hikes through the amazing countryside.

BTW, saw your other post about skidding on snowy road...thank goodness you survived it. My husband hit an oil patch returning from the Peace Corps in Guatemala years ago; the car rolled off onto the only ledge for miles around. He has never been able to tolerate mountain roads since, although we have certainly driven on them!

There are a couple of book shops on the main Corso in Montepulciano but, to be honest, the best place around for maps - especially the walking maps - is in Pienza - it's only 10 mins down the road. We were so lucky on the day it snowed in December 2010 as our slide was stopped when we crashed into another vehicle that had gone off the road into a ditch by the side of an olive grove. I still feel quite peculiar when I go along that particular stretch of road, even on dry sunny days.
