Sipadan - is it safe?

Hey,

I'm meant to be visiting a dive resort and staying in Semporna for 1 night, then 2 nights on Mabul island and then another night in Semporna. I'll be diving during these days so expect to be on a dive boat for most of the day.

I'm obviously concerned about what's going on and I really don't want to cancel my trip.

Anyone shed some light on whether or not it is safe to still go?

Hi - I am due to go to Mabul this Tuesday (2nd April). Seriously in two minds about going...... I have 2 children with me (aged 11 and 13). Has any one got any updates on the security issues? Is it safe?

I have just returned from Tawau/Mabul/ Sipandan with my family. It felt safe, all we saw was army presence (in the background) at the airport. We aslo saw a checkpoint going into Semporna. On Sipandan there was some armed military but I think they are always based there. No issues at all. We almost cancelled our trip, glad we didn't - asking around everyone said they hadn't seen any issues. Hope this helps.

Glad you went @swimmingbee - I feel the same, very glad I went and didn't have any issues at all. I actually went only a week after all the craziness so definitely felt uncertain before getting on the plane, but saw no signs of trouble there upon arrival besides the one checkpoint.

Just FYI - there's a military base on Sipadan, you are correct. This has been there since early 2000s, I believe, so that's normal you saw them there.

Hi everyone,

I went on my trip to Mabul/Sipadan (March 30 - April 3) and there was no problem at all. Just like Amy and Swimmingbee said, there was a checkpoint going into Semporna, but that's pretty much it. Yes, there has always been an army camp on Sipadan (which was previously nestled towards the inside but has now been extended to the front). There was also increased security in the resort I went to on Mabul -- there are armed soldiers within the resort itself, especially at night. Their presence was pretty subtle (you don't really notice that they're around), but they advise you nicely if you walk around alone to remote parts of the resort. There were also soldiers at the Tawau airport. As far as I know, from talking to people, the situation at Lahad Datu remains uncertain, but Semporna is fine.

I was travelling alone as a single female, and I felt safe. I think there were also relatively fewer people, considering it's peak season right now, so I even got 2 days of dives at Sipadan! :) I'm glad I went on my trip, so I really wanna thank this thread (especially Amy!!) for reassuring me.

And how were the dives? I'm thinking in going there in July.

I'm going next week, so any update on the situation would be very much appreciated!

Furthermore I recommend people who'd also like to go to check their travel insurance, mine does not cover places that have a governmental travel ban, which means I need to find another insurance for diving...

We went at the start of may about a month after the incident and it was absolutely fine! Completely normal in semporna. Go, mabul is amazing for diving!

Thank you for your reply

So with this insécuritèe ...

Prices fall they will ...

Est'il can go to the islands without going through the horribly expensive clubs?

I'd like to go with friends for one week of Snorkling and see some turtles and maybe one or two dives ...

Thank you for your help ...

I went to Semporna/Mabul end of June, absolutely fantastic diving, highly recommended!! It seemed like business as usual in Semporna, although that can of course suddenly change should anything happen. I wouldn't stay in Semporna though, it is much cheaper, but Mabul is sooo much nicer!
