Suggestions for middle of July

I've read about all the messages and think I have a pretty good idea about what we will do in Uvita this July. We are 2 couples in our late 30s. We are renting an amazing house in Ojachal for a week in the middle of July.

A few questions:

1) The other couple scuba dives. Any recommended outfitters? Would it be worth it to snorkle with them (we've snorkled in Hawaii and Caribbean, so it would need to be pretty good to be worth our time and money)

2) Safe beaches closeby. We're all good swimmers and we live on the Coast in California, so we're used to the Pacific, but know that riptides should never be messed with.

3) I really want to do an adreneline pumping zipline tour in the canopy. Recommendations.

4) Also, the same for a day trip of river rafting.

5). Massages? Do you know of any who will come to the house in Ojachal or is their a spa nearby. What do you think the cost would be?

6) Is there some sort of list of waterfall hikes?

7) Is there a horsebacking riding outfit that will let you run the horses on the beach?

Thanks! Can't wait to get there!

1) For scuba & snorkelling: www.madaboutdivingcr.com , http://www.southernexpeditionscr.com/ & www.mysticdivecenter.com

For snorkelling only (in the marine national park or Cano Island) & other tours: www.ballenatourcostarica.com/in/home.html

http://www.dolphintourcostarica.com/

http://www.bahiaaventuras.com/

2) Always need to be carful in the ocean but near Ojochal Playa Ventanas is safe and very beautiful (caves you can walk trough to the other side during low tide). There is now a parking there at a private residence charge you a few bucks but keeps your car safe and easy walk to the beach. Playa Uvita in Marino Ballena park is also safe is Playa Pinuela. All surf beaches have rip tides like Dominical (life guards on duty) or Playa Hremosa are both good for surf but dangerous. Always ask locally.

3) Zip lining “Flight of the Toucan” in Hacienda Baru - www.haciendabaru.com/ is a 2 hour nature walk with guide and canopy tour via zip lines. Lots of fun but not extream at al, you will get to see a lot of wildlife.

4) Water rafting with http://www.dominicalsurfadventures.com

5) Massages There are a couple of massage therapists that will come to your villa, you can ask on location in Ojochal. Cristal Ballena Hotel has a spa as does Cuna del Angel Hotel.

6) waterfall hikes - http://www.cataratasnauyaca.com/ they offer horse back as well as self guided hikes (closed Sundays)

7) Is there a horsebacking riding to run the horses on the beach - http://www.rancholamerced.com/ just north of Uvita. You need to talk to them and go out during low tide.

Also, when in Ojochal don't miss a dinner at Exotica!

Great food at Citrus, Ylang Ylang (Indonesian) and pizza and italian food at Mamma e Papa Restaurant.

thank you sooo much. We'll be driving from SJO on a saturday morning to Ojachal. Do you recommend the mountain road or the coastal road. Are they about the same? Should we do one coming and the other going? Just don't want to miss out on any great sightseeing:) I'd love to see as much of CR as possible, but my traveling companions probably just want the drive to be as quick and easy as possible.

You are welcome! From San Jose airport the quickest way is via the coast about 4 hours to Ojochal. It is also an easier more relaxed drive after your flight and getting used to Costa Rica roads and driving habits. On your way back you can go via San Isidro, Cierro de la Muerte to Cartago and on to San Jose. It is a very beautiful drive but best done in the morning as it can get foggy and rainy in the mountains. It is a more challenging drive but I love it. Maybe visit San Geralodo de Dota on the way.

Re: canopy tour question

Not any kind of expert but I've been doing loads of research for my own trip in August and was looking for a longer, more adventuresome canopy tour myself and came across Osa Canopy tours: http://www.osacanopytour.com/

It's only been reviewed a couple of times on TA, but I came across someone comparing it with Hacienda Baru on either Fodor's or Lonely Planet and their review indicated that Osa Canopy was a bit more intense, if that's what you're looking for.

Not sure yet which one we'll do on our trip yet, but just something I came across with my own research.

Happy travels!

Thanks so much for that info... I'll definately look into it. I think Manuel Antonio might have something as well... I vaguely remember hearing something.
