Hi Wald0555

Welcome to the forum

Yes Lyttelton was once a volcano and so was Akaroa. They blew up long long ago and the sea came in. Lyttlelton was the first to go followed by Akaroa.

But don't worry - if you are visiting it is unlikely to cause you any problems!

cheers

Lyttleton and Akaroa Harbours both are volcanic craters, 9 million years old. Both are well and truly extinct.

The Crater Rim Walkway provides stunning views on a clear day - south into Lyttelton Harbour, west to the Alps & north to Kaikoura across Pegasus Bay. Well worth a drive or a half day walk.

I believe that Otago harbour is also an extinct volcano. There is in all probability of an alien space ship landing on your car than seeing any of these go off. Or pehaps Lotto division 1 three weeks in a row! There is volcanic soil all around the place in NZ.

When kiwi go to Oz, one of the first questions we are asked is, "So which part of the shakey Isles do you come from?" Then if they think you are Ok the second question may involve sheep!

Hi zhuhai,

Re Crater Rim Walkway provides stunning views on a clear day - south into Lyttelton Harbour, west to the Alps & north to Kaikoura across Pegasus Bay -

(1) is it possible to drive around?

(2) which route to take to drive around, instead of walking to enjoy the view?

The Port Hills provide quite a stunning drive. You can look towards Christchurch city or the otherway over Banks Peninsular. The easiest way to find it is probably through Sumner, taking the road up over the hill to Lyttelton. At the top of this road there is a road to the right. That follows along the ridge. It is sealed, but narrow and twisty. just watch where you stop for photos, and be wary of cyclists. There are quite a few tracks for walkers and mountain bikers that run down either side of the hill.

At almost every harbour in NZ plus other places, several parametres are measured hourly parametres such as tide height, salinity, water temp currentl flow and direction etc .

As water temp would already be being monitored, during the earth quakes it was important that the temperatures where reported to allay concerns that the earthquakes may reawaken the ancient volcano.

The reason Ports monitor and record weather is fort he safe operation of Ships
