Geirangerfjord and the Hurtigruten

I'm a bit confused about the Hurtigruten in the summer and the Geirangerfjord. We are considering tranvelling south from Lofoten to Bergen with the Hurtigruten. (We will have our car with us but also have young children and are looking for ways to minimize hours spent in the car.) I've read that the Hurtigruten goes to Geiranger in the summer, but it's unclear to me if that means that you get to see the fjord in the same way that you would if you took a tourist boat specifically for Geirangerfjord tourism. In other words, do you just see a little bit of it or is this the same route as the tourist boat takes?

Hurtigruten only goes into Geirangerfjord going north, so you will not see it at all in this direction. You could get off at Molde or Alesund though and drive south from there. If you take the ferry from Hellesylt to Geiranger you will see all of the most spectacular parts of this fjord. The drive over the mountains from Geiranger in either direction is also wonderful and not something you would see from Hurtigruten.

Seeing Geirangerfjord from Hurtigruten or from the deck of any other boat (such as the Hellesylt-Geiranger og Valldal-Geiranger ferry) is the same. As Norsc points out driving over the mountains plus a ferry ride on the fjord does in fact give a greater experience.

If you leave Hurtigruten at Molde dock, this route is nice: Molde-Åndalsnes (with small detour to Trollveggen or further up the valley)-Trollstigen (mt pass)-Valldal-Geiranger (detour to Mt Dalsnibba)-Hellesylt.

From Stryn you can continue by car to Bergen. With children you should include at least one sleep between Molde and Bergen, for instance around Stryn.
