Renting Scooters in Unawatuna/Galle

Hi there.

We are 6 friends planning to spend 5 days staying between Unawatuna and Thalpe. We will make day trips from our villa to Galle, Hikaduwa, Welingama, Mirissa - and return back to our base every evening.

My question is - what is the best mode of transport for us?

1. Should we rent scooters? If yes, what license do we need and does it need to be endorsed by AA in Colombo?

2. Should we rent a big car? If yes, does our international driver's permit need endorsement by AA in Colombo?

3. Rent a big car and driver? If yes, how much will it cost us per day to rent a 7 seater vehicle with driver? The details online are a little fuzzy.

4. Should we use tuk tuks for our travels? If yes, how much will a tuk tuk ride from Unawatuna to Weligama cost?

Thanks a ton in advance!

KJ.

Stayed in Thalpe last year and we got scooters for our day trips. It was the most flexible option for us and totally easy to cover all the areas you mentioned. They were not interested in license but just got a copy of our passports (i think they don't really care if you cant drive they just want their scooters back!)

We took tuktuks to go out for dinners in Galle so that we could have a few drinks and not worry about the drive back.

What you should keep in mind though is that the main road is extremely busy with lots of cars / trucks and not really an enjoyable ride. Having said that, it is the most flexible way if you want to explore and make many photo stops (like we do!)

A driver and AC would be more comfortable but they will try to charge you about $90 a day which might not be worth it depending what you are doing!

Hope it helps!

Taxi for 90U$ for a day is overpriced

Hello!

Definatly rent scooters! They're much fun! Only disadvantage is that you can not drive on the highways. However, if you're going Colombo to Galle, it's nicer to take the scenic route along the coast. Check out this blog for info about getting your license!

You can drive scooters on highways, but not on expressways.
