Any reliable and safe snorkeling location in September?

Hi there,

I am heading to Unawatuna in September.

Now I am thinking about taking my snorkel-equipment with me or not.. ;) The water should be clear enough though and safe :)

I love snorkeling, so what´s your experience, would it be possible around Unawatuna at that time?

Hi Michael,

99% chance for not. The problem is the rough sea outside the reefs, it stirs up the sand also near the reef and makes visibility close to zero. Sorry.

Only reliable and safe locations then are Trinco/Nilaveli area and Passikudah area, East coast.

All the best,

Hi Erik,

thank´s for fast reply!

Looks like east coast would be better for entering the water ;)

Though Trinco and Nilaveli is quite far north in the eastern part.

How about Arugam Bay for snorkeling, it seems to be more famous for the surfers, but I read that you can hire a boat that takes you out for snorkeling there?

Best wishes!

Arugam Bay is good for surfing - not for snorkeling and swimming.

It's not impossible that not far from Arugam there is some reef reachable by boat yes. But at Nilaveli and Passi one can snorkel from shore which is of course far superior...

Thank you for information!

Regarding Nilaveli we talk about that famous Pigeon Island, or about the beach of Nilaveli itself for snorkeling?

Pigeon Island looks like being with a boat as well.

Well it's the whole zone starting from the beach towards Pigeon Island. Distance is about 3 km so generally people do shorter snorkel from the beach and then longer snorkel trips, indeed first carried by boat, near the island. But that costs money, hence in a 1-week stay maybe people do it 10 times at different places near the beach and 2 times near island. At Passi even all snorkel trips are directly from the beach.

Have fun,
