Travelling around Tuscany

We are travelling from Rome to San Casciano in Val di Pesa in the heart of Tuscany. We plan to get the train to Florence from Rome. We would prefer not to drive from Florence to San Casciano in Val di Pesa. How is public transport around the area i.e. taxis, buses and trains etc. Is it possible to get to and from our destination using those methods? Also, is it possible to get around Tuscany using those methods (and cycles)? Or are we going to have to give in and hire a car?

Thanks for all of your help.

p.s. we travel in July

To enjoy Tuscany a car is more convenient.
