Praia Da Rocha :- costs for beers, meals etc

Hi All,

Please can someone give me a guide to the likely costs of the following in and around PDR?

Small beer in bar (happy hour or not)

Large beer in bar (" ")

Cocktails in bar (" ")

Diet Coke in bar

Bottles of beer in supermarkets (i.e. Sagres)

Cans or bottles of Diet Coke in supermarkets

Main course meal cost in restaurant (i.e. pizza, piri piri etc)

Cost of hire of umbrellas/loungers on beach

Also any recommendation for restaurants both local and international, and good bars (with happy hours if possible) would be appreciated also.

I appreciate it will be a rough guide but I just need some guidance to help with budgeting. We are heading to PDR for a week in early September.

Thanks for your help

1. Re: Praia Da Rocha :- costs for beers, meals etc

hi

Our last visit to PDR was April.

Great tourists menu's - 3 course some inc a drink range from 6.90 euro.

We found a great cocktail bar - chaplins (set back from main shops by supermarket) They had an offer on 3 cocktails for 12euros.

Most places had beers 1 euro

Mugs tea or milky coffee 1 euro

Great pizza/italian always busy - opp Algarve Casino hotel.

Amazing Steaks - upstairs Sitting Bull - this is a must!!!!!

A great chinese ( Asia i think its called! dragons outside) buffet or 5 course - far end set back towards Concorde (another great place to try)

A walk to marina is a must (lovely pool near beach with great double sunbeds - it was free to swim if you bought a drink) we spent a few days thr.

Most places had tourist menu with plenty of choice inc chicken piri piri.

Lovely cafe along broadwalk.

Hope this helps

2. Re: Praia Da Rocha :- costs for beers, meals etc

Thanks for that Wendy.

I have read elsewhere that there are bars selling beers for 1euro but didn't believe it to be honest. Maybe thats an off season price to lure people in? I don't know, but aside from one or two bars in Albuferia back in 2003 and 2005, I think I was paying upwards of 2euros for a large beer and that was some time ago. I will gladly accept 1 euro for a beer though!!!!! Even if it is a small one!!!

Thanks for the tourist menu prices. Albuferia was good value for food a few years back so I was hoping it was the same in PDR. Piri Piri was particularly cheap, sometimes under 4euros and whilst I'm not expecting that kind of value these days anything around the 6-9euros for a main course will fit our budget. Obviously it will be swings and roundabouts some evenings.

Great tips also. Thank you very much.

Very much looking forward to our cheap week away in Praia Da Rocha in September. Only just over 6 weeks away.

Small beer in bar (happy hour or not)

A) Go to Mjs bar which is opposite Irelands Eye on the main strip. €1 for a small beer draught or bottled. Tell here Pete sent you in and said you could have a free Sambucca :o)

Large beer in bar (" ")

A) JDs again on the main strip. See Jasper the happy hammer and you will get a large beer for €2 all day and get to sit on their lovely back terrace overlooking the sea and beach.

Cocktails in bar (" ")

A) Dont do cocktails....sorry.

Diet Coke in bar

A) €1 or €1.50 depending on type of bar you go in.

Bottles of beer in supermarkets (i.e. Sagres)

Cans or bottles of Diet Coke in supermarkets

A) Varies but cans are around 60c 1.5ltr is about €1.70

Main course meal cost in restaurant (i.e. pizza, piri piri etc)

A) Go to varandas which is at the top of the Telepizza hill on the right. 3 courses for €5.90

Cost of hire of umbrellas/loungers on beach

A) I think about €5 but cant swear to it as I rarely go on the beach. I hate the sand :o)

Also any recommendation for restaurants both local and international, and good bars (with happy hours if possible) would be appreciated also.

A) For a top class meal I always recommend Squash Restaurant which is top quality stuff. For cheap meals see above.

Good bars... JDs....MJs....Squash Pub for live sports etc and decent pool table.

4. Re: Praia Da Rocha :- costs for beers, meals etc

Thanks a lot for that detailed post, just what I was looking for.

It seems there is still a lot of value to be had on the Algarve then? I know when I was in Greece 2 summers ago, you couldn't get a beer for under 2.5euros and it was more often than not 3-3.5euros+ so I am more than happy to be hearing talk of 1euro small and 2euro large beers!!! Not that drinking beer is everything of course....

Also food looks good value as well and I have made mental and written notes of the restaurants recommended.

Very pleased we chose the Algarve again for a week, very much looking forward to some sun in September.

Cheers

For a €5 taxi ride to Alvor you could find the Chill Out Bar on the Dunas Complex which served large beer all day for €1 :o)

Not that beer is the be all and end all of course lol

Hi, 2 sunbeds and one umbrella were 10 euros in June but if you walk sown towards the marina you get them for 8. We ate at the Squash restaurant(near the Club Praia Da Rocha)on our last night and thought it was excellent, certainly not overpriced for the type of place it was.Had the Chicken Fahitas at the Raging Bull and they were huge. enjoy

Best restaurants in PDR are the Atlantis and the Titanic - last year approx. 20 euros p.p. for excellent 3 courses - I will be back this Sept.

hi got back from pdr 24th july, there were 15 of us and we all tried the tourist menu on our first night and never bothered again! Would recommend Squash and Atlantis for really good meals and service also Asia chinese other end of strip by internet cafe very good value. If you like indian food had a good meal next block up from Asia. Further on again a nice Italian think it was called Bull and Pepe also very good value.
