Christmas in the Coromandel

Hi everyone! We will be on the North Island in December and would like to spend Christmas on the Coromandel Peninsula. We aren't sure where to stay - we will be hiring a car but would like to be near a beach (we're from the UK so Christmas on the beach is a must!), and at least within reasonable driving distance to Hot Water Beach and Cathedral Cove.

We're backpacking so won't have a huge amount of money to spend, but we don't want to be in dorms. Looking for somewhere quite quiet and relaxed that we can have a chilled out couple of days. Can anyone recommend anywhere? Advice on towns/areas as well as specific hostels//lodges/B&Bs very welcome.

Thank you!!

I think Whitianga is where you should look.

Be aware the whole Coromandel is a very popular holiday spot for NZers, so if not already, pretty much all accommodation will book out.

I would say that the cheapest accommodation will already be gone. Perhaps look at renting a holiday house (holidayshomes.co.nz or holidayhouses.co.nz or bookabach.co.nz). However, often people owning these houses use them themselves at Christmas. All the beach towns in the area will be pretty busy at this time of the year.

Christmas and afterwards for the next two months is high season in Coromandel and will be full of Kiwi holiday makers. You are going to have to book whatever you can find - quickly - if you are wanting to stay there then.

Failing that then Auckland has plenty of nice beaches that you can spend Christmas on.

Whitianga would be a good base on the east coast, and handy to Hot Water Beach. Have a look at -http://www.wotif.com to see if any of the available accommodation appeals to you. Also look at Tairua as a possible base - www.aatravel.co.nz/main/searchresults.php…

Hi Sally :)

I think either Tairua or Whitianga would suit you best. They've right in the heart of the Coromandel so are central to a range of sight seeing and activities. Accommodation isn't the cheapest in peak season and you will definitely need to book ahead if you are planning on staying somewhere. I'm not too sure about accommodation in Whitianga (try http://www.aatravel.co.nz/new-zealand/Whitianga_Accommodation.html) but Tairua has a few backpackers, motels, holiday homes and also a holiday park. I live in Tairua if you have any questions just ask :)
