Somewhere to say between Auckland and Whakatane

Hi, we are travelling from Melbourne to Auckaland and onto Whakatane in Feb 2012 for a wedding. We have 3 children 13,10 and 5years. We would like to stay maybe halfway between Auckland and Whakatane on the first night. We have been told it is about 4 hour drive from Auckaland to Whakatane so would like to breadk the journey for the kids. Any suggestions??

Thanks,

Jenny

Mt Maunganui would be the best choice, lots to do, plenty of places to eat, hot pools for the children, beach and walks. It's 2.5hrs from Auckland but them you'd only have an hour's drive the next morning so no rush as you get used to the time difference.

I agree that Mt Maunganui would be a great place to stop, it's 2 and a half hours from Auckland. there are several great apartment complex's to choose from at the beach end of the Mount which is the best area to stay. The Beaumont apartments are are good option for families. February is still a fairly busy time so make sure to book ahead. Be sure to climb up or walk around the mount, it really is a beautiful spot.
