Cash vs Debit

Spending a week in Nosara Paradise Rentals for fishing and relaxation. Is it more advisable to carry cash for the trip or are debit cards recommended? Excessive fees??

Don't carry large amount of cash on you, there are now 2 ATM in Nosara, withdraw as you need. You might be able to pay for some services with credit card too, withdraw colones for more bang for your buck.

Totally agree with Cubanon. Bring a bit of cash and a couple of cards and just get cash - preferably colones - as you need it.

I usually bring enough USD for a full week in small bills

One thing to note about the ATM machines, the one in Guiones (Banco Popular) doesn't accept Mastercard. If you have Mastercard you'll have to head to the Banco de Costa Rica branch next to the gas station.

Check with your bank as to what fees they charge. Some are outrageous. Normally you will pay an additional 2.5% over the exchange rate, plus a flat fee per transaction. Mine charges a flat $5.00. So to take out $100, it costs $7.50 over and above the exchange costs.

If you take out US$ (which some, if not all, machines will let you do), you may not have to pay the exchange or the 2.5%. I'm not sure.
