Best location for travel in north-west.

I would like to visit the north-west area of Sicily (Erice, Segesta, Marsale, scala dei turchi), but would like to do these trips staying in one place. I will be travelling with an 8 year old, and so I don't want to have to change hotels every few days. What would be the best and most convenient place to stay in order to be able to take these side trips? I would prefer a beach town, but if travelling from a beach town is inconvenient, I would gladly stay somewhere else. Also, would there be busses from Palermo airport that could take us to this location? Thanks.

Welcome to Sicily MontrealValerie!

Marsala and especially the Scala dei Turchi are not considered Northwestern Sicily.

The Scala dei Turchi is located in Agrigento province in Realmonte along the southern coast.

There is no direct public transport to the Scala dei Turchi.

There is no bus from Palermo’s airport to San Vito Lo Capo.

Interbus runs direct service from Palermo’s airport to Trapani. Then take AST from Trapani to San Vito Lo Capo.

Otherwise, take the Prestia e Comandè bus from Palermo’s airport to Palermo.

Click on “Aereoporto Falcone Borsellino – Palermo”:

Then take the Russo bus from Palermo to San Vito Lo Capo.

If not a Sunday, you could also take the train from the airport in the direction of Palermo to Piraineto, and change trains in Piraineto for a train in the direction of Trapani to Castellammare del Golfo. Then take the Russo bus from Castellammare del Golfo’s train station to Castellammare del Golfo and onward to San Vito Lo Capo.

Trapani is a small city, and Trapani offers the best public transport in Western Sicily. There are beaches in Trapani, but not the best in the area.

San Vito Lo Capo surely isn't a convenient base for touring and exploring Western Sicily, since it takes the AST bus 01h15 in each direction just to and from Trapani, adding at least two and a half hours each day to your journey.

Where to stay for a family holiday in Sicily:

Perhaps divide your time between San Vito Lo Capo where you would enjoy the beach, and then Trapani for touring and exploring the sights.
