Need to do big supermarket shop on Sunday in or near VNC

We - four adults, two children - are arriving in Vila Nova de Cacela on Sunday 3rd June. We prefer not to drive on holiday and selected the villa on the understanding it is only a short walk from the town's amenities - market, small shops, bars and restaurants. However we do need to do a big shop for bulkier items - soft drinks etc. Could anyone tell me if there is a large supermarket in or near the town that would be open on Sundays? - and also when would it close?!

I'm thinking of a Modelo or Pingo Doce rather than a family-run store.

Or would it be best to go into VRSA? Ideally one that's not far from a taxi rank!

Thanks in advance!

There is a large Continiente (Modello) in the shopping mall in Tavira

Cacela is about half way between Vila Real and Tavira so I would choose Tavira. The massive Continente mentioned by sunndays is at the Tavira Gran Plaza mall and is open until 11pm every day.

Vila Real has an Intermarché right outside the railway station and a LIDL in the town centre. Intermarché is open until 8pm, LIDl until 9pm on Sundays.

But - are you intending to do this without a car? Cacela is 7 or 8 miles from either town. You would need to ring for a taxi to take you from Cacela and then make another call when finished. I know that there is no taxi rank outside the Intermarché in Vila Real, not sure how close to LIDL.

That's going to cost I reckon 10 or 11 Euros each way.

Trains and buses in Cacela are in short supply during the week, let alone Sundays. The mall at Tavira is a typical out of town location with nothing in the way of public transport on Sundays.

I hope that helps.

We have stayed in VNdeC now for four years, and back again this summer.

Love it. Quiet, some small shops and a few nice restaurants.

We do big shop in Tavira - Continente, as mentioned above.

There is a new Pingo Doce near VRSA, but the complex at Tavira has loads of shops, restaurants and its indoors.

Without a car I think we would struggle, but we do play golf.

There's a small taxi rank in the middle of the village (VNdeC).

The locals mastery of English is as good as my Portuguese - and yours probably!
