TranzAlpine or Car or Coach To AP and return

Hi

Toying between the above for a day trip to Arthur Pass cos of the cost of TranzAlpine ($510 for 3 pax). Unable to find a coach trip in the morning to AP and return to Christchurch in the late afternoon. Will like to spend some time in AP to explore. Looks like car is the

alternative besides train.....

Any suggestions?

why do a return trip to Arthur's pass from Christchurch? It may suit your overall itninary better to stay the night.

Coaches do leave Chch at 7.30 and 3 pm and travel via Arthur's pass to Greymouth.

the 7.30 coach returns same day to chch passing through AP aboiut 3 pm

Hi

Not going to Greymouth as I am starting my trip from Christchurch to Mt Cook to Queenstown. You mean I can catch the 7.30 coach to AR and follow the 3pm coach back to Christchurch?

The other option is to take the TranzAlpine to AR and back to Christchurch which is rather costly for 3 pax at $510.......day trip.

The train trip from Arthurs Pass back to CHCH especially in the summer is a bit of a disappointing trip. I would suggest that you go to AP by train and come back by coach.

How's the driving route like? Any particular spots to take breaks, look out for, etc?

There's a great lookout over the Otira Viaduct just west of Arthur's Pass. Several walk can be accessed along the drive too.

The road is curvy, narrow and a wee bit steep, but well maintained and easy enough to drive.

On the way stop at the carpark just by Cave Rock Station. There is a DOC reserve there and it's about a 10 minute walk to the most amazing rock formation. It's the perfect stop for a picnic. Then just past AP village there are two walks. I have done the one to the Devil's Punchbowl water fall. About 20 minutes return.

Well worth it. Pleasedo not feed the Kea, it's bad for them.
