Swimming with children

I am planning on staying (on the beach) in Saint Cyprien with a 2 year old and a 4 year old - both happy enough in water - but I keep reading the sea shelves away quickly. Does anyone have experience of this? Is it safe enough for children or very deep very quickly, and if so any suggestions for a gently shelving beach???

Many thanks in advance...

It is deep very quickly. For a "gentle shelving beach" go to Canet, 3 miles from Saint-Cyprien.
