hi angeleyes yes you will deffinately need coats and warm clothing to do a glacier tour but check with your tour company to see if they supply any warm clothing,IMO it is better to be well prepaired, if you are well "rugged up" wooly hats, gloves, ski jacket ect and you get hot you can always take something off, but if you dont take warm gear and need it you could very quickly end up in trouble

cheers john

You will need a warm jacket to tour NZ in Sept, regardless of the glacier trip. Best to wear layers as the mornings and evenings will often be quite cool and mid to late afternoon quite warm.

Happy travels :)

Thank you. Does it usually snow in that area at that time of year?

Sept is the first month of spring, so expect everything from a late winter blast of frigid temps off Antarctica, snow, spring rain, summer warmth. Possibly all four on the one day!

And yes, Aoraki/Mt Cook can have fresh snow all year round at the top of the mountain.

The variety of weather can all be felt in the same day. WL suggests layers, this is a really good idea. Rather than have a thick coat, i would go for one that is water and windproof, that way if it's cold you can put a jumper on it to keep warm, but still use the same jacket when it's warm and wet.
