Driving Mt Cook to Christchurch for flight back to Australia

Our flight doesnt leave until 8.45pm does this allow us plenty of time to drive from Mt Cook to Christchurch to catch the flight as we would prefer not to stay in Christchurch overnight...thanks

What time of year are you travelling? Is it a domestic or International flight? Do you have to return your car to an off-airport site?

AAmaps gives 4:55hr for this drive and you would want to allow 30 min for a photo stop at Lake Tekapo & 30-60 min for lunch or afternoon tea - say 6 hr minimum.

Thus for an international flight, with check-in at 6:45, leaving Mt Cook around 12:30 would work. 1 hr later for a domestic flight.

As always travel insrance is advised for unforseen accidents/ road closures.

Oops, I didn't read the title. Yes, you will need to be at CHC by 6:45 - earlier if your rental car company closes before then.

thank you so much for your reply, therefore if we leave mid morning we should have ample time - assuming nothing goes wrong...

I think the key is time of year.

We just drove from Mt. Cook to Christchurch on Friday. Left after breakfast at about 9:15. Perfect, clear morning so drove up to The Hermitage for some photos, made multiple stops driving down the lake, another stop for the obligatory photo stop at the end of the lake, gas, stopped at the Chapel of the Good Shepherd, ate lunch and walked around Geraldine (Verdi's straight in the back right at the T - yes; Berry bakery - yes for pastries, no for food), a complete standstill for about 30 minutes for a 4 car accident including one car on its roof only 6 cars in front of us just outside Rolleston coming into Christchurch and were at our B&B by the Palms Mall just northeast of downtown at 4:45.

That said, in the approximately 5000 kilometers I've driven in the last 5 weeks on both islands, the stretch from the bottom of the lake to Tekapo on SH 8 was the most remote, least trafficked drive of our entire trip. We even commented at the time it would a tough place to have something go wrong with the car. That was on our minds because the main belt on our rental shredded 3 days into our rental and we had new front break pads and rotors installed in Dunedin.

If the weather is OK, I'd probably do it but make fewer stops to allow for a bigger cushion.
