Catania to Aeolian Islands to Cefalu

We are a family of four adults arriving in Catania airport on Sunday June 15 at 20.25. We have rented a house near Cefalu for a week from Saturday June 21 and fly back to Ireland from Palermo on Monday June 30 at 11.55. We would like to spend our first two nights relaxing and finding our feet before travelling to the Aeolian islands. We are thinking of one or two nights on Stromboli to include the sunset trek. We would then like to head to Lipari or one of the other islands for a couple of nights before heading for Cefalu to arrive on Saturday afternoon.

Where would you recommend to stay for the first two nights and how should we get there from Catania airport? Would Taormina be suitable?

Would one night be enough to spend on Stromboli and which island would you recommend as base for the other nights? While there we hope to kayak, hike and relax on the beach.

To get to Cefalu, should we take the hydrofoil from Lipari to Palermo and train to Cefalu, or travel via Milazzo?

Welcome to Sicily A B!

Taormina would be suitable - Take the direct Etna Trasporti bus from Aeroporto Catania to Taormina.

You might base on Lipari both nights, and trek Stromboli from a base on Lipari.

There's only one daily seasonal crossing from Lipari to Palermo at 7.45, and there are many ferry and hydrofoil crossings from Lipari to Milazzo, so return to Milazzo.

Thanks Vagabonda, that's very helpful. I have been following your threads and find them very useful.

Is it feasible to do the sunset trek on Stromboli as part of a day trip from Lipari? We thought it might not be and were considering a ferry direct from Milazzo and overnighting before continuing to Lipare (or Salina?).

Prego A B,

It is feasible to base on Lipari for a Stromboli trek. You would then not pack and unpack and change hotels for a night each, but you could also spend a night on each island.

You would then also have the flexibility to trek either day, and the ability to check for weather conditions, and activity on Stromboli.

A B,

yes, I would stay one night on Stomboli and hike up to the top. Being based on Lipari may be convenient for you luggage, but a night on Stomboli is also special and then you could enjoy the black sand beach in the morning and explore the small town by day.

As for the other two nights, Vagabonda has suggested Lipari as a base, which is an idea. However, you may prefer Vulcano with its spectacular hike up to the top of the crater, and thermal mud bathes and unique balck sand beaches. A good kayak company is based there too:

Or Salina with its great hiking trails up into the nature reserves, and particular beaches such as Pollara.

If you do decide to stay on lipari, look into the beach town of Canneto.

Ciao,

Cristian

Apologies since I misread your initial post and thought you had fewer nights on the Aeolians than you are anticipating, but if you're thinking one or two nights on Stromboli in addition to a couple of nights on Lipari, then I fully agree with Cristian A's suggestion to spend a night (and even two) on Stromboli, because Stromboli is a very special and unique experience.

And Vulcano would be a possibility as well, so you would be fine on Lipari or Vulcano.

And should the weather or volcano on Stromboli not cooperate during the time of your visit, you would be able to take excursions from both Lipari or Vulcano for a trek, so you would enjoy many options.

Lipari is the largest island with the most amenities, and it is possible to take a day trip to Vulcano if you decided to base on Lipari.

Il Postino was filmed at Spiaggia di Pollara on Salina. Spiaggia di Pollara is currently open, but there's really no beach. There's a harbour you can visit and see the beach, but the beach opens and closes depending on the condition of the rocks.

The Bandiera-Blu award-winning beaches can be found on Lipari and Vulcano.
