Ferry to Lipari (september)

Good afternoon,

We will be visiting the Aeolians in September. Since we will be travelling with our large suitcase (15kg) we are thinking it might be best to take the ferry, since the hydrofoils have restricted baggage allowance right? Also we have plenty of time, and think it would be nice to stand/sit outside on the deck.

We will be arriving in Milazzo by train at 12.27. Will there be enough time to get to the docks to take the 13.20 Siremar ferry to Lipari? Also, what is the most convenient way to get to the docks? Is it necessary to book the ferry ticket in advance for travelling at the 24th of September? Do you have to pay the booking fee also when buying the ticket at the docks?

Salve Tom N!

It's not a problem to take the hydrofoil as well with luggage. Just purchase the ticket for the luggage.

But yes, the open deck on the ferry is lovely!

AST local buses run between Milazzo's train station and Milazzo's port, but there are taxis as well.

You wouldn't have to book the ferry crossing in advance.

I took taxi from the train station to the port for 12 euro. Taking the taxi was the way to go since I beat the crowd waiting for the bus and therefore didn't have to wait in line at the Siremar ticket window. The drive took about 6 minutes.

Vagabonda, Amy W., thank you both for your replies. Very helpfull. We will opt for the ferry which is already the cheaper option even without the added luggage ticket and gives us the chance to enjoy the trip out on the deck :-) Getting to the docks in time will not be a worry if it only takes about 6 minutes.

Prego Tom N,

Yes, the ferries are less expensive, but slower than the hydrofoils.

And the distance from Milazzo's train station to the port isn't long at all, and easy 6-7 minutes.
