Sicilian beach holiday - Aeloian or Egadi?

Hi friends! I am planning a beach holiday for 5 nights in Siciliy. I visited Taormina last year and loved it, and was also lucky enough to visit Palermo. This time around I tossing up between staying on Favignana in the Egadi Islands to visit the beaches, and perhaps do some day trips to the surrounding areas in Trapani province, segesta, monreale, selinunute, etc. Otherwise I am thinking about staying in the aeolian islands on Salina and relaxing in that region.

Would love to get anyone's opinions on these options. How far is it to get to the Aeolian islands and which airport is closest? Is it realistic to stay in. Favignana for 5 nights and do day trips from there as a base?

Which is nicer and easier to get to, Egadi or Aeolian?

Thank you!

Genna

Using Favignana as a base is not really realistic, any island as a base will take alot of time as far as travel is concerned. You can reach the Aeolians pretyty easily - Catania is the nearest airport. But isdepends when in September, summer schedules end mid month.

missgenna,

both favignana and salina are beautiful, and as modicasa has indicated, using an island as a base can have its limitations. However, if you are oriented to one of these two islands, go for it. Both are beautiful for completely different reasons. Favignana has stunning crystal clear waters. Salina has two high mountains, great hiking. Both offer great opportunities for swimming although they don't have many beaches. From Favignana you could visit the other two Aegadian Islands, Marettimo and Levanzo, either by hydrofoil or local tour boat, and you could also do a day trip to Trapani. From Salina you could visit some of the other Aeolian Islands, either by hydrofoil or local boat and could even get over to see the spectacular eruption of Stromboli, which has been more active than usual lately. So as for which is nicer, I would say both are beautiful and if you see one archipelago this trip you will just have to come back and see the other on the next trip!

Now, as for which is easier to get to, the airport of Trapani is located just outside the town of Trapani, and from there you could take the hydrofoil to Favignana, not to hard. If you fly into Palermo you will have to travel a bit further, but there are buses or you could take a taxi to Trapani. For the Aeolian you could look into the airports of Palermo or Catania. From Palermo there are hydrofoils directly to Lipari and then you would change hydrofoil and go on to Salina. From Catania you would have to take a bus or taxi up to Milazzo (about two hours) and then a hydrofoil over to Salina (two/three hours) with the possibility of maybe having to change hydrofoils on Lipari. If you find flights to Trapani than, yes, it would be easier to get to Favignana, but otherwise the other options are half a day of travel and not to much of a hassle.

I'm biased..... Remember that Australia is the eighth Aeolian Island, there are actually more descendants from the Islands in Australia than there are people living on some of the Aeolian Islands :) If you do decide to visit the Aeolian Islands, it may be easier to stay on Lipari in mid September because of the frequency of hydrofoil and ferry services to other Islands and Sicily rather than Salina. As Cristian mentioned, there are spectacular eruptions occurring on Stromboli at the moment (see the Isole Eolie Facebook page).

Welcome to Sicily missgenna!

Winter schedules for the islands begin 11 September.

You would not base on any of the islands with the expectations to do day trips on Sicily.

If you decide on the Aeolians, and you'd like beaches and ease of transport, then consider staying on Lipari during the low season.

Hi there,

Thank you so much for all the great advice. At this stage we have booked our flights to Palermo, so are flying into and out of there. I have arranged to stay the last night in Palermo as we have a morning flight when we leave. So that just leaves where to stay for the other 4 nights! We have decided we really just want to relax and do lots of swimming and beach relaxing for the other 4 days, if we can do this with a great atmosphere where are staying, fantastic! A couple more questions, how long does the hydrofoil take from Palermo to The Aeolian islands? And how far is it to drive to Trapani from Palermo? Maybe we will do the odd day trip, but we are not planning on hiring a car so it will be nothing too difficult. Thanks in advance for the tips! Genna

What are your dates of travel?

The direct hydrofoil from Palermo to the Aeolians only runs through 9 September.

It's just over an hour's drive from Palermo's airport to Trapani.

You would hire the car at the airport, and then return the car at the airport prior to your last night in Palermo, but if you decide to stay in Western Sicily, you could spend your last night relaxing around Scopello, and you wouldn't even need to go to Palermo itself.

Palermo's airport is located west of the city, so if you were to focus on Western Sicily, you could enjoy the beaches at San Vito Lo Cao, Favignana, and Zingaro, and also see Segesta and Erice.

This itinerary maximises your time.
