Leaf peeping for Brits

We are planning a trip to New England for the around the middle of October. We are thinking around driving the Mohawk trail staying in places like North Adams, Litchfield (somewhere) Newport, Cape Cod and finally Boston before going on to New York. We were thinking about spending 9 days on the New England part of the trip. Does anyone have any comments/suggestions for us or recommendations of places to stay. All replies gratefully received!

FYI - They are saying that this year the foilage will be changing over a little earlier than normal and the colors won't be as bright. This is all due to the lack of rain around here this summer. Up north they are saying it should be be more "normal" since they had more average rainfall. Apples and pumpkins are ready a lot earlier this year as well.

I am already seeing some slight change in color on some trees around where I live.

You're going to find it very difficult to make hotel reservations in the prime foliage areas - so where you can stay may determine your exact itinerary. I just booked a hotel room in what sounds like a dive in Vermont (crack addicts in the hallway was mentioned in one review) on Columbus Day weekend - there weren't many choices left.

North Adams is not the pearl of Berkshire county.it is an tired mill town, and you might do better.Places will be costly but Stockbridge,Great Barrington are two great towns. Also the Mohawk Trail can get a little congested. You could takeRte9 from Northampton thru some nice hill towns, swing into Pittsfield then south into Lenox ,Stock or G B.
