Best Beach town ? ..not over run with putt putt and gocarts!

I am looking for the best beach town in coastal South Carolina that offers more of a historic or charming feel rather than some place extremely commercial and over run with gocart and putt putt places. Please make suggestions.. This is a family of 5.. 2 teens and a 6 year old so we are mixed ages. Love beach house type areas and nature... Also plan to day trip in Charleston.

Any of the Charleston area islands will meet your basic criteria. No go-carts or putt putt here!

Isle of Palms and Sullivans Island (on the north) and Folly Beach (on the south) are only about 20 minutes from Charleston's historic district. Sullivan's Island has a lovely residential feeling and, with historic Fort Moultrie located at the eastern end of the island, it is packed with history. Isle of Palms, which is adjacent to Sullivans, also has many fulltime residents and offers many vacation rental homes. Folly Beach, which gets many daytrippers including surfers(!) is busier in summer than the other two, but has an eclectic atmosphere that might be particularly enjoyable for the teens.

Edisto Beach, which is a lovely, old-fashion summer cottage community, definitely meets your basic criteria for a beach town. I did not mention Edisto because it is much further from Charleston than the others. If you plan only one day in Charleston, Edisto may be the right choice.

Edisto is pretty isolated and over an hour from Charleston. If you want an old fashioned beach vacation, where the main attraction is the beach, it might be just the place for you. If the teens want things to do and you want some shopping, restaurants, historic sites, etc ~ it will not be the place for you.

Isle of Palms. We take the family there every year for spring break... everyone from the 85 year old grandma to the 35 year old 3rd generation to the 15-18 year old teenagers and the 2 year olds have a blast! It's a favorite family destination... without the cheesey putt putting or bathing suit shops every third store!
