Bugs in the Whites?

I'm thinking about heading up to the Whites late this week (just ahead of the holiday weekend crowds) for a hike. How are the flies this time of year?

We've had so much rain, the mosquitoes will be thick as thieves. Don't go without repellent!

Bring bug spray -- but don't be too afraid. We had one of the worst black fly seasons anyone can remember, but as vicious as they were, they're now pretty well done for the year. I was out for extended sessions in the woods last weekend and only saw a few forlorn black flies (compared to swarms a week before). We're settling back into normal mosquito mode, which means you'll encounter mosquitoes all day in the shade/woods, and heaviest around dusk. That said, the skeeters haven't been that bad so far.

We are in the area in October. Is there still a problem then.

Will we have problems with bugs last two weeks of August?

Phillymom -- not so much, but if you go into the woods, you should have bug spray. The best is called Jungle Juice, sold at REI. It'll probably put you in an early grave, and you should not put it on children you love, but it will keep the bugs away!

The blackflies tend to be prevalent in June, and usually go away by the Fourth of July. Mosquitoes are around the rest of the summer, but decline rapidly in mid August as the temps at night start to go down. It is hard to find any bugs in the fall.
