Relaxing break after NYC wedding

My son is planning a NYC wedding in June 2015. We will be travelling from Scotland for the wedding and want to add a relaxing beach holiday after the wedding, probably for a week or so. We don't want to travel too far and are thinking of somewhere in the Hamptons, accessible by public transport. We may hire a car for exploring the Hamptons but don't want to drive from NYC. We like good restaurants and a little bit of buzz but not too busy. Any suggestions very welcome, thanks.

When in June? Are you wanting warm "beach weather"? Beaches in that area can are generally a bit chilly for laying around in swimsuits in early June.

Well, we are from Scotland so I expect your chilly is still warm for us! We want somewhere we can walk around, visit other little towns or villages and a little bit of beach time would be a bonus. Wedding probably 4th June so heading out of NYC probably around the 6th. 70 deg F would be fine for us, we are hardy souls! We enjoy a nice atmosphere, good food and walking. Hope this helps.

Your budget and availability may dictate your options. If you rent a car once you're there, almost any of the vilalges will work for you..Southampton and East Hampton are the largest villages. The. Southampton Village Inn was just renovated. It's really an upscale motel but I've heard the rooms look good.
