Least crowded, best deal

I know nothing about the NC coast but we have always vacationed on the Alabama coast and that looks like maybe it won't be happening. We want an affordable place to rent a house (able to rent in Alabama for $1000 a week) My husband wants to fish, the kids want to boogie and skim board and want to sit and relax on the beach. We don't like crowds-that's why we love the Fort Morgan area of Alabama! Is there anyplace that fits in NC? THANKS!

Look at Holden Beach, part of the Brunswick Islands on the southern coast of NC; to me it's the best of those islands; & IMHO the best beach on the NC coast. It's a real escape from the real world, a barrier island, with very little commercial properties on the island...one little fisherman's motel, 3 restaurants, a small grocery, an ice cream shop; that's about it. No large condo developments, and the few condos that are on the island blend in; as no building can be more than 2 stories high on the island. Great beaches; Lots of nature left on the island...large marsh areas with wild life. 2 great inlets to enjoy hiking, fishing, etc. on each end of the island....also the ICW (Inter Coastal Waterway) on the back of the island is a great place to enjoy fishing, crabbing, and watching the boats go by. Just about anything you might need is found just off the island....Grocery store, bank, shops, restaurants, putt-putt; a small water slide, an arcade, etc.

Oceanfront homes would be out of your budget, but you should be able to find something off the oceanfront which would work for your family.

There's also Oak Island, Ocean Isle, and Sunset Beach which are part of the Brunswick Islands; rates at Holden and Oak Island usually run less than Ocean Isle and Sunset Beach.

If you don't like crowds and like family oriented, affordable places with great fishing, you might want to try Topsail Island.

There are three towns on Topsail - North Topsail Beach, Surf City and Topsail Beach. Prices vary depending on when you take your vacation. Prime season, which generally runs from mid June through mid August, is more expensive but there are still some in your price range. During the mid season and off season there are tons in your price range.

Good luck and have a great vacation!
