re need advice this week if possible re a visit to NC

hi, sorry this is so last minute. i am going to drive to nc - leave sunday morning early and need to be back by thurs night. we are looking for places to retire to in 5 years. i have a week off and thought i'd check out some palces including: greenville, nc; some nice beaches near greenville, nc - maybe atlantic beach?? or are others better? we were thinking about living in a university town like grenville, nc or at the beach and be able to drive back between either. also want to check out wilmington, nc and nearby nice beaches. any recommendations? and any recommendations on first place to visit if coming down from maryland area. any places to check out in each town. we do not have children, interested in athletic and cultural events, sitting and walking the beach etc. would like rec on areas of greenvile and wilming to visit and also which beaches. thanks for any recommendations.

Atlantic Beach is nice and large. You can go a little farther to Fort Macon beach which is nice and they have restrooms there and showers too. TopSail beach is fairly nice too. Atlantic beach puts you close to alot of things in the area. You've got a straight shot of beaches from Fort Macon beach to Pine Knoll Shores beaches.

I like Carolina Beach just out of Wilmington. There is not so much to do there, but you are a close drive to Myrtle Beach if you like shows and such. Also, not far to Raleigh if you want to do more city activities.

Wilmington is also a university town. It's the home of UNC-Wilmington.

Down in the southeast part of NC there are a lot of golf communities and things to do near the ocean. Sunset Beach, Ocean Isle Beach, Calabash and Shallotte are pretty popular. Sunset Beach and Ocean Isle Beach are great places because you have the beach, but it's not as busy and built up like Myrtle or Kure Beach. The only thing is that if you're looking for cultural events, you'd have to drive to Wilmington or Myrtle. They have some beautiful properties that you can get pretty reasonable because of the housing market being slow. The other nice thing is that you don't have the major traffic jams that you would experience in the bigger cities. There are plenty of local eateries and things to do at your own pace. Hope this helps - good luck!
