Prince Rupert to Calgary via ....?

My wife and I will be getting off the BC Ferry in Prince Rupert with a hire car and driving to Calgary over the next week.

We are undecided on the following options:

1. Spend some time looking around PR then drive to Smithers for an overnight stop then on to Jasper. (We've got a couple of nights then in Jasper).

2. Leave early the day after getting to PR and driving straight through to Prince George, overnighting then on to Jasper. (As per above).

This will be in July next year so we will have plenty of dayligh for driving.

We are pretty right after we get to Jasper, we've allocated most of our time for Jasper, Banff and Calgary. We are just not sure which is the most interesting place to stay?

Will also post in the BC forum to catch the folks there as well.

I'm not familiar with that part of BC, so I'm not able to help you there. However, since your time is so limited, I would recommend spending most of your time in Jasper and Banff. Calgary isn't chopped liver, but with a limited time budget, I don't think you'll regret spending almost all of your time in the mountains.

I recently made the trip from Prince Rupert to Calgary and would

reccomend spending a day in Prince Rupert if time allows as there are

some interesting things to see. The North Pacific Historic Fishing village

is a great tour and is located near Port Edward on the highway headed

east about 20 minutes from P.R. Another good stop would be the

Museum of Northern British Columbia where they have native dance

I think I would spend the day and night in Prince Rupert, if you want

accomadations a little more on the upscale side the Crest Hotel

is right on the water and if getting a waterfront room has beautiful views

of the mountains and ocean and there dining room is very nice. On the

other hand if you waant something unique the Eagle Bluff B&B sits

right on the wharf and and has a great breakfast before you take off in the

morning. A good place for lunch or dinner is the Breakers which sits right

on the water and you can watch all the marine activity.

An interesting place to stop on the way east is the Morriston Gorge where

you can watch the native american indians scoop salmon out of the water

while standing out on platforms. Mount Robson is a good stop, highest

point in the rockies and there's a nice little restaurant there if you need

some lunch.

Hope some of this is helpful. Enjoy your trip!

Hi AltonTraveler

Thanks for that interesting and informative reply.

We've already booked the Eagle Bluff B&B so happy to hear you think it unique.

We've decided to stay in Smithers for the next night so the trip won't be as far and give us more time in Prince Rupert. Thanks for the tip on Morriston Gorge - that sounds really interesting.

Looking forward to our holiday which has been made easier by all the contributions from fellow T.Advisors.

Im glad you've taken AltonTraveler's advise - I would have echoed exactly the same thing. Smithers is a good choice for an overnight - it's a beautiful setting. THey have an awesome golf course if you are so inclined :) and some good eateries. The sushi place on Main St is great.
