Vancouver to Calgary

We want to start our Canadian Rockies trip from Vancouver and end at Calgary. The trip should be around 3 to 4 nights. Can somebody suggest :

1. Towns where to spend the nights

2. Mode of transport since we do not want to drive with approximate cost

2. Distance and travel time between 2 towns

Welcome to the Canadian Rockies forum!

1. Check out this TripAdvisor Traveller Article for information on routes between Vancouver and Calgary: tripadvisor.ca/Travel-g154922-c120076/Britis…

2. You can join an organized tour; there are far too many tour operators with far too many packages to list them all here. One unique, and more flexible, option, is to use the Moose Travel Network's tours, many of which allow you to stop and restart your tour (hop-on, hop-off) at certain points along the way: www.moosenetwork.com/tours_canada_west.php

Moose's tours are aimed at younger, budget-oriented travellers, but some older TA members have enjoyed going with them.

You could take the scheduled Greyhound bus service: www.greyhound.ca

Or, finally, you could fly between Calgary and Vancouver, via WestJet or AirCanada.

3. For reliable information on distances & travel times between any two points in Canada (except for routes with ferry crossings, such as between Vancouver Island and the BC mainland), Google Maps ( www.maps.google.com ) and Mapquest.com are very helpful.

Unlike other areas around the world, this trip does not have many stop and go transit options. There are obviously greyhound buses and train service, but almost all people take organized tours or drive themselves. Check out some of the articles that were mentioned to see more of the trip you are planning.

I would drive.

Have fun.

The route between Calgary and Vancouver via the Canadian Rocky Mountain parks and the Okanagan valley is a well-travelled and much discussed itinerary here, although because of the geographic scope of it, the information is scattered among many forums. I would suggest browsing recent posts in the following: Canadian Rockies, Alberta, Banff, Jasper, Whistler, Calgary, Edmonton, Vancouver, British Columbia, Kamloops etc. (Also, if you access the forums at, say, the provincial level, you can see all the sub-forums beneath.)

The forum "search" function will bring up loads of useful information. (Look for it just above the list of messages). Also, the TA "Traveler Articles" and "Top Questions" have a lot of helpful info. Go to the TA page for whatever destination you need advice, then look on the left hand side of the page, and you'll see the Traveller Articles, starting with "More on ...", "Before you go", "Things to Do", etc. Top Questions for each destination are found in the top right corner.

Travel options are somewhat limited without a car. From Vancouver, you can take VIA Rail or Greyhound to Jasper - www.viarail.ca - and Brewster operates a day tour that can take you to Banff. From there, Greyhound or the airport shuttle can get you to Calgary. Brewster and a whole slew of other companies also offers multi-day coach tours following a similar itinerary.

Online maps can be very useful in laying out your itinerary - they have "directions" features which will give you mileage and driving times between stops. Try www.mapquest.com or www.maps.google.com .

Online resources that will be useful for the Rockies -

The Jasper and Banff/Lake Louise tourism offices:

Parks Canada: www.pc.gc.ca - pick whichever park you want info for (Banff, Jasper, Yoho & Kootenay; once you are at the park's page, you'll see a menu down the left - choose "Visitor information"). One of the main attractions in the area is the drive from Lake Louise to Jasper on a highway known as the Icefields Parkway - www.icefieldsparkway.ca .

Hope this helps!
