October trip

Just starting to think about our annual holiday and we would love to go to the Rockies this year. But is October (early) a good time to go? Will the roads be open? Will the lakes be frozen? Will we see any animals?

Appreciate all the advise. I have airmiles that I would like to use and that is the only time that we can use them.

Thanks

Early October is the tail end of the peak season in the Rockies. The weather will be getting much cooler, there's a chance of snow, the trees will be turning. After the Thanksgiving holiday (Oct 10), some things close, such as the Moraine Lake road, Lake Minnewanka cruise, and Jasper tramway. The last Maligne Lake cruise is Oct 2.

The lakes won't be frozen, but they will be starting to freeze.

Is it a good time to go? It's good if you're prepared for cooler weather and maybe snow, if you love seeing the mountains with their first fall dusting of snow. It's good if you want to see the Rockies at a bit of a quieter time, but still with okay weather. It's not good if you want to see every single paid attraction or expect to plan a very tight schedule which an unexpected snowfall would disrupt.

Critter watch:

Elk boys will be bugling, moose boys will be looking for moose girls, bears will be feeding as much as possible for the upcoming winter hibernation, geese and others flying south for winter vacation. It can be a busy time of the year for wildlife watching.

It all depends on what you are expecting or wanting out of your trip. What do you plan to do? It can be a lovely time to visit, but it will be cooler in temperature. I actually enjoy hiking in temperatures when they are a bit cooler. The tourism will have died down, so that is a bonus if you like things a bit quieter.

Here is a temperature chart for Banff as an example. www.banff.com/banff-weather/index.shtml As you can see it shows it can get as low as freezing and a high of 10.C You can use Banff's temperature as a pretty good guide, anywhere higher in elevation will be cooler, such as Lake Louise.

It can be a nice time to see scenery and wildlife by vehicle, but as Country_Wife stated you have to be okay with the possibility of snow.

Cheers:)
