How many days needed?

My wife and I would like to cover Banff, LL, Jasper, and Yoho in mid- to late-June this year. We like to do a lot of hiking. How many days are necessary to see and enjoy this areas without it just being a drive in, get out of the car, look, and move onto the next spot? Thanks!

To cover all those areas in a relaxed fashion I would suggest at least 10 days. If you are going to take up time with lots of hiking 2 weeks would be better. Not sure what type of hiking you are into, the higher elevation trails will still have snow. How much depends on how our winter decides to end. However, there will be lots of lower level trail options.

Cheers

Have a read through some of the trip reports that are compiled and linked in the second "Top Question" to the right on your screen - that will give you a good idea of some of the things to see and do, and timing. We usually recommend 6 or 7 days in the Canadian Rockies national parks, just to see the main tourist sights & attractions. If you are avid hikers, you could spend a whole summer in the parks and not run out of hikes to do.

There are a lot of hiking guidebooks for the area to choose from, but the most comprehensive is Patton & Robinson's "The Canadian Rockies Trail Guide" - perhaps you can find it or call it in at your local library, or purchase it online. It has all the trails for all the national and provincial parks in the Canadian Rocky Mountains.

Thanks for the help. Based on flight cost, vacation days, and overall trip cost, we decided to go for 12 days. The first and last days include the flight in and out, so that we give us 10 days in the area. Admittedly, that's not really enough, but hopefully it will be enough to give us a healthy dose of the region and make us want to come back again even more.

Any recommendations on how long we should stay in each area?

1st night Canmore.

2nd night Banff Townsite

3-6 nights Lake Louise

7-10 night Jasper

1th night Calgary Airport.

If you have been to Banff townsite before, then night 2-6 Lake Louise. The reason I like LL over Banff is you have a 45 to 1 hour head start over those staying in Banff, to hit the trails and avoid the crowds, on the icefields & Yoho.

A simple 10 day itinerary is recommended just for sightseeing. If you want to include lots of activity, specifically hiking - 14 days is ideal. Mid to late June is very early in our hiking season, so come prepared for everything. Many of the high trails will still be snowbound, but there's plenty of good possibilities to keep you busy. Hiking poles are helpful to keep you safe at this time of year.
