Do the icewalks go onto Columbia Icefield?

Hello Rockies experts!

We are traveling to the Rockies in August and will travel the Icefield Parkway up to Jasper as part of our trip. On our way back down the parkway we would like to stop at Icefield Centre to do one of the icewalks with icewalks.com. (Last time we did the Brewster vehicles). I'm trying to figure out if the icewalk hikes go up on to the Columbia Icefield itself, or do they stay down on the glacier? If not, is there a way to get up onto the icefield with a guide?

Thanks!

Not sure what you mean by a difference between the Glacier and the Icefield, but if you mean do the icewalks go further towards the ice shelves in the opposite direction from the lodge, then yes, you can get quite close to those ice walls.

And no, unless you have lots of glacier experience you should NEVER consider under any circumstances walking ANYWHERE on your own outside the small boundary that the Ice Explorer vehicles take you to.

Have fun.

Cheers,

Terry

As you probably know, the Athabasca Glacier is one part of the larger Columbia Icefield. Both the Brewster Ice Explorer vehicle tour and the icewalk people advertise that they go onto the Athabasca Glacier. For what it's worth, I suspect that getting up higher onto the icefields simply isn't practical and/or safe with a group of day visitors with no climbing experience. Your best bet is most likely the longer Icewalk Deluxe.

You can experience guided scenic walks along the Athabasca Glacier with Explore Rockies. This 2 hour walking Tour is rated easy, reservations are required.

Just to be crystal clear, the Brewster walks do not go onto the Athabasca Glacier or the Columbia Icefield, which is what the OP (Clemsontigerfan) was asking about.

explorerockies.com/sightseeing-tours/Columbi…

On the bottom of this page, it states: "NOTE: THIS TOUR DOES NOT VENTURE ONTO THE GLACIER SURFACE."
