Visa fee for UK citizens travelling with Thomas Cook Airline

Just returned from Riviera Maya where we met up with friends who had travelled from London with Thomas Cook Airlines. We flew with Thomson, came home last Thursday and paid 765 pesos each to exit Mexico. We'd been advised it was 800 each before we left the UK but our holiday rep told us the price had gone down.

Discussing this with our friends tonight who flew home on Monday and they paid 900 pesos each! Did the price change over the weekend? Even more worrying is that they say they gave the money to a man who then appeared as cabin crew on their flight home. Just read the FCO website who warn that fake officials operate in some airports - have they been conned? You get no receipt for the money paid - just a passport stamp.

This fee is collected by the airline not the government. The airline then pass the fee to the government. This explains why the guy collecting the money later appeared as airline staff! It also means that the airline (e.g. Thomas Cook) can collect whatever amount they want and that one company may charge a different amount to another. The actual amount charged per passenger by the government rarely changes (usually once a year in January). Technically the charge covers all taxes (including airport taxes) as well as the visitor fee.
