Help: First time at Riviera Maya?!?!?!

I've been to Cancun a few times and this time I think we are going to RM for the 1st time.

We as in my family with 2 kids in tow.

I've been doing my research and I think I'm just over thinking all this, dunno... it's a blur now, LOL.

For resorts, is there an ideal or preferred location that is better than others?

Maybe something in walking distance to shopping or other things?

For those of you with kids, are there resorts with water parks that stand out above the others?

Is RM really more laid back than Cancun like I'm reading about?

Thanks.

"Riviera Maya" is a huge area. Most resorts are not within walking distance to any town. There are some, but not many.

I guess "laid back" could be just a state of mind. I find the Riv Maya resorts to be more laid back, but I think that's just my personality. Seeing high rise hotels one after the other in Cancun does not enable me to relax. But some people swear by Cancun and only Cancun. If you choose one of the larger mega resorts with multiple hotels within the complex they really offer a lot of options for a family. Iberostar Playa Paraiso complex has 4 hotels at different price ranges to choose from. Paradisus La Esmeralda also has a great family atmosphere.

It would help to know what resorts have already caught your eye and also your budget.

We are looking to go 12/27-1/3, right around New Years.

This is our first option.

If not, maybe first two weeks of December or so.

Lots of resorts are already booked up for the week of 12/27 and wow, the prices double in price too!!

As for budget, I'd say no more than $700 per day.

I'd prefer around $600 but would entertain $700 max.

We are looking for a good family AI resort with a water park.

So far in no order we've found the following:

Barcelo Deluxe

Grand Velas

GBP Coba

Sirenis

Sandos Caracol (tons of mixed reviews on this one)
