Travel Tips to Afghanistan

I'm planning my first trip to Afghanistan by the end of 2012 and would any and all recommendations, tips, and suggestions on how get in and around Kabul and surrounding areas. Are there tips for an English-only speaker (will this be a problem)? Thanks, L

Do you have a guide lined up? You'll find some Kabulis speak a little English, but not a whole lot. Consult your hotel about getting around the city, they can probably help you.

Be careful. It may be the capital city, but kidnappings are still high on the Talibans list escpecially for Westerners. If you ask around for English guides, your going to draw them right too you. Unless your going for missionary reasons, or if you have private security, then I would hold off for another 20 years.

Kabul will be cold during the end of the year, December to March, and mostly snowing. There are a number of good hotels you can stay. Security in the city during daylight is okay. I have a number of foreigner friends who roam around the city with no problem. there is a couple of taxi service who are safe and can be used by calling them. Serena, Park Start and Safi Landmark hotels are good places to stay, however there are also a number of guest houses. You may not really need an interpreter as you will always find someone speak english, especially the young generation.

I would strongly advise against travel to Afghanistan. My job is directly related to the security of this country and it is still unstable. Unless you know someone here who is willing to be your personal guide, your safety will be in jeopardy. The general public is not nefarious. However, the chance that you will run into someone associated with criminal activities will be far higher than should be even considered. Travel outside of Kabul is extremely dangerous and foolish without armed escort. You have to understand that this is still an active war zone. If you are dead set on going, there are specific places that you should at all costs avoid. Many parts of Afghanistan still belong to the Taliban and their associates and they will consider you an incredibly easy target for kidnapping or making a YouTube video. Please rethink your vacation.
