Things to see and do within walking distance

First time travellers to Montego Bay. I would like to know if there are places and sights to see within walking distance of this hotel or do you have to take a cab or bus? Thank you.

Which resort? Some are right downtown and some "Montego Bay" resorts are 30 minutes drive outside of MoBay in the middle of nowhere; at a few resorts, you cannot even see the "middle of nowhere" sign.

"First time travellers to Montego Bay."

You have posted in the Rose Hall forum. Rose Hall is a suburb of Montego Bay.

"I would like to know if there are places and sights to see within walking distance of this hotel"

You do not name the hotel. Which one?

"do you have to take a cab or bus?"

Without knowing the name of the hotel, in general you can walk to little from any of the major Rose Hall hotels. You will probably end up needing a taxi to get to almost any place. For information on public transportation in Montego Bay see the following

We will be staying at the Iberostar Rose Hall Suites in Montego Bay. Sorry for the confusion.

Iberostar is not in MoBay, it is isolated in a distant suburb, some 15 miles outside of MoBay. Here is a sat image of that area: wikimapia.org/…b

As you can see, there is nothing to walk to which means that taxis are needed to venture off campus for any venue.

The Iberostar complex is 3 adjacent resorts. From above, the Grand is on the left, Suites in the middle and Beaches on the right. The Grand is the adults-only resort and I have read that guests of the other two resorts are not allowed to use the beach in front of the Grand (or even walk along it).

Thank you for the information. Can you recommend any hotels that are close to Montego Bay that are all-inclusive?

"any hotels that are close to Montego Bay that are all-inclusive?"

There are many more all inclusive resorts located in Montego Bay itself. However, I can think of only one all inclusive resort that is within walking distance of things to see and do within town. For all of the other all inclusive resorts you will want to take a taxi almost anywhere (even though they are in town). That one all inclusive in town and with things within walking distance is the Royal Decameron Montego Bay.

For more recommendations you need to identify several more requirements in an all inclusive resort in addition to 'Montego Bay' and 'within walking distance of things to do'.

Thank you for the information. Greatly appreciated. Our group likes to do things off site everyday. They are not pool or beach people and rarely take part in any hotel activities or games except for the evening shows. This means that we are spending a lot of time off site either on tours or walking through towns and various sight seeing places. Which is why my request was to see which hotel would be within walking distance to Montego Bay. However, I see from the map that most of the all-inclusives are rather far from town. Is this the same for Negril and Ocho Rios as well? I guess im just concerned about always having to take a taxi or bus to get anywhere.

"Is this the same for Negril and Ocho Rios as well?"

The technical answer for Negril that every all inclusive resort is in town. However, the walk from the farthest Negril all inclusive to downtown Negril is 7 miles one way. Most of the all inclusive resorts in Negril are at least 3 miles from downtown Negril (one way). The use of a taxi to get almost anywhere, other than the beach, will be required. In addition, Negril should be considered almost exclusively a beach and pool destination with few sights close town. Laying on the beach or next to the pool is the #1 activity in Negril for most people.

Ocho Rios, on the other hand, is closer to a larger number of activities and sights outside of the resort hotels. But the number of all inclusive resorts in walking distance of downtown is rather limited. Most all inclusive resorts are near town but will require a short taxi ride to get one to/from town.

Finally, you mention 'Our group'. Keep in mind that in Jamaica many all inclusive resorts are designed for, and in some cases restricted to, specific groups of people. The major specific groups are: adult couples (age 18 and above), adults only (couples and singles 18 and above), and families with children (age 21 days and above). Any recommendation for a suitable all inclusive resort requires an understanding of who is in ' Our group'.

Thanks again. You certainly are a wealth of information for me. Our group consists of two couples, early sixties. We do not mind being in a hotel with families and kids and have actually never tried a couples only or adults only hotel.

While there are AIs in Ochi that offer walking opportunities ( Sunset Jamaica Grande ) it was purchased in July by a Mexican company, Palace Resorts. The resorts will close Sept 1 and reopen under the Moon brand 'sometime' in early 2015. It is a mega-resort with some 730 rooms located right in the core of Ochi.

Negril is an excellent alternative. I understand that beach and pool is not that important which are Negril's strong points. More interesting for you folks, most of the AI resorts are built along a stretched-out Negril. While there is somewhat of a core town, most of the interesting local venues are along the beach road. The Negril beach is actually two beaches that do not connect except along a road. The quiet beach (were there are no shops) is called Bloody Bay all the resorts are AI but staying there means a hike or a taxi ride to the busy beach. The busy beach is call Long Bay (some 5 miles long). There are shops, pubs, bars, vendors, concerts available all along the beach side of the road as well as Great Morass side of the beach road. Negril has a commercial water park called Kool Runnings. The nightclub to visit called "The Jungle" with Thursdays being Ladies night. Have a look at negril.com for the nightly beach concerts entertainment calendar.

The sat map for busy section of Long Bay: wikimapia.org/…b

Would be helpful to know if you are traveling as couple(s), adults (couples & singles) or as a family with kids.
