money changing and seven eleven

hi, my wife and i will be travelling to KYN for two weeks in may. just wondering is it possible to change money from gbp to baht on the island, do they have the little money changer stalls like in other parts of thailand we have visited ?

also, we are staying at the six senses, but so as not to become bankrupt , will be using the local bars and restaurants. is it possible to buy beer at the seven eleven ?

thanks in advance for any help

Hi

We are not long back from KYN and yes you can change UK money on the island. We changed money at the pharmacy just along the road from the seven eleven in the main town. However we got a slightly better rate at the exchange bureau at Phuket Airport just after you come out of the departure hall (tiny purple booth on left just after first set of exit doors from the departure hall - think it was the Siam bank counter).

Seem to recollect we got about 52/53THB to the pound at the airport but on KYN only got 50 or 51......then when we got to our hotel in Ko Lanta they were exchanging at 49THB to the pound. The advice I got was that it was probably better rate on the island but that was not our experience.

We went into the 7-Eleven to get some toiletries and didn't notice if they sold beer. Feel certain they would though. However we were staying at Villaguna and there was a shop next door where we bought beer. Was about 60THB for a can of Singha. Think you would pass this travelling from Six Senses to the town. We explored the island on scooters and went past Six Senses so am fairly familiar with the roads now.

Check out j'taime restaurant in the town - it was fantastic.

Have a great trip!

We loved Koh Yao N oi and are already planning a return trip next year :-)

There is an ATM sitting all by itself outside the SixSense on the main road if you happen to get short.

This place is across from 7-11 in the 'town" to buy some beer.

Chans restaurant is outside your resort, an Italian (with a real Italian) just a bit north. But the place we partied was The Para Bar, its a boat on a hill just a little walk south from SixSenses. Price was the same as "Trouble" mentioned, 60thb for a can but really great food and a bit of music late into the night.
