Moreton island

Hi there

We are planning a trip to the isalnd next year visiting from vic.

Any advice on which part of the island is best... We are not looking at the resort areas, so either Bulwer, kooringal or Cowan ... Tips on beaches, fishing, food/ drink, fuel costs compared to mainland, what's a must to bring, would be much appreciated.

We will be renting a holiday house.

we are 2 families with older children.

and we will have our own 4 wd

Thanks in advance,

Hi Moreton is a wonderful place for a holiday, we have just returned! The only issue we had was with the prices at Bulwer in the store, absolutely disgraceful. I object to paying eg. $27 for a bottle of wine which retails on the mainland for $6.90, post mix@ $54 per 6pack. Petrol $3 per litre, not a bad markup considering Micat buy fuel wholesale, transport it to Moreton on their barge & then rip off the tourists! We have been regulars for many years but talking to the locals who are extremely upset at the unbelievable prices being charged by Micat operators who have a monopoly on the Island. Before this happened they had competition & prices were very fair at bulwer, we actually found it far cheaper to buy good quality food at Tangalooma in their convenience store (so do the locals!) Something you consider is that you will use more fuel on the sand tracks. It is a wonderful place for a holiday with heaps to do, our kids always loved it. There are some reasonable places to stay around Bulwer, try google. Make sure that you plan well & enjoy Jak.

We go over all the time and stay for a month or so at a time.

If you are renting a holiday house and spare no expense the nicest place is definitely Cowan cowan especially if you have kids as there is no vehicle access on the beach there. It is half way between Tangas and Bulwer. Contact Cowan real estate agent to get availability and prices on rentals. Bulwer is good too and they have recently made the beach in front of the township 20kmph ( if people follow the speed limit). There are many rentals there plus also you can consider the new eco village and the Glamping packages offered by Micat. As Micat owes a fair bit of Bulwer including the eco village Glamping and the store They offer deals for glamping that include your barge fair which is pretty good price considering the barge is 230.00 and thats before you add kids to that plus a vehicle permit.

Castaways restaurant at the Bulwer store is reasonably priced and put on a good spread very tasty. The beach cafe at Tangas is okay as well but a bit dearer. However there is air conditioning down at tangas and cold beer on tap.

The general store food and especially fuel bait is way dearer at Bulwer than Tangas ( except Ice but still dear at 7.50 for a bag and they don't sell block ice anymore - Shame on Them!!) As a rule bring everything you need especially alcohol or you will pay through the nose.

Unfortunately it's a remote island with Micat having the Monopoly over the barge service so they charge whatever they want. You can sometimes get to the island Via Kooringal via Straddie but it is a stuff around takes heaps longer and they don't have drive on drive off its reverse on drive off which if you have a camping trailer ummmm Not happening. There are houses at Kooringal to rent but its a long drive to the scenic North end of the island to fish etc do northpoint and the light house or blue lagoon. Which you would want the tides to be in your favour or you'll find yourself stuck or churning through tonnes of fuel which you can only get at Bulwer for $60.00 for 20litres.

Hope you have a good trip. You'll love the island. We do.

Hi,

I'm another lover of Moreton Island & have visited numerous times however we always moor off the beaches on our yacht & if we want to get around the island we just hire a 4WD from the resort.

It's an island so prices will be always more expensive than on the mainland. As mentioned we found the food at Tangalooma Resort shop to be cheaper than at Bulwar Store.

Enjoy !
