$US Dollars are Peso

When I am out shopping is it best that I use pesos verses us dollars? Do most places accept debit cards, credit cards? I am aware of the transaction fees that may apply. What about travelers checks? Thanks

We never use our credit or bank cards for shopping unless it is at the hotel owned shop on premise, just too many things can go wrong in the wrong hands. We do however always carry US Dollars, accepted widely, never refused and always appreciated :) You can use Dominican Pesos also and if using an ATM machine that's all it will dispense. The exchange rate is better I believe at the bank, the regulars and locals will chime in for more on that.

Travellers Cheques = no good here.

ATM's will dispense Pesos.

If you are shopping in and around a resort you will be able to use USD. Most tourist related businesses will take Visa and MasterCard.

If you are out and about away from the resort you will want Pesos. USD are Not universally accepted and often when they are taken you will get a bad exchange rate.

Do remember to notify your home bank of your travel plans or they will put a hold on your credit card or ATM card with the first use fearing fraud.

NEVER bring traveler's checks. They are useless here.

Use cash, dollars are widely accepted, but pesos are better. Dont be suprised if you get chickoletes for change(small mint or gum). People dont like/have to use coins or lower value bills.

We only took US dollars and they were accepted everywhere.

Katie, did you check the rate you were given. Most vendors love you, they make money on your money.

We didn't buy much out of resort but the exchange rate for drinks in Bayahibe seemed okay.

Do the banks not except American express travelers checks?

Travellers Cheques (Checks): Leave them at home. Very very difficult to exchange here. Bring some cash Basha and hit an ATM if you need more.
