Shopping- unique and/or great price

we will be in Cebu and Manila and have 1-2 days that we can spend doing some shopping. What are the things that the are worth shopping for there in terms of prices or uniqueness? And where might we find them?

Also I was thinking about a cellphone, basic unlocked with SIM any suggestions?

Thank you

In Cebu of course you have the Alaya and SM Malls. They will have the normal things that most big city malls will have. As far as prices, I have found that the malls are almost priced as expensive as any where else in the world..

I would suggest you go to some of the local markets and you can find more native crafts and handmade items. Prices are useally very cheap, but of course if you are foreigner they will increase the price. So if its not a marked price on it, offer half or 3/4 or what they ask for and stand firm. Walk away, they will surely call you back. Many of these markets in Cebu.

Personal Opinion of what is unique, is the brooms, the shell arts, hand carved wooden pieces, dried fish. Also the Cebu Famous Dried mangos, and shamrock cookies.

You can find these markets on most all provinces in Cebu. Just ask the taxi driver or hotel staff and they can tell you where the nearest local market is. They are all about the same. Make sure keep you jewlery and watchs off and put up, also keep close hold on your bags while in the markets.

Cell Phones are no problem here. They are millions.. Very easy to find at about any location. I would tell you that 90% of the cell phones here are of poor quality. If you are buying for just while here in philippines, you can find at any local shop for P 1000 up to P 5000. But remember a lot of them they are selling as new.. THEY ARE NOT. They are reconditioned in new packages. If your buying one for personal use and want to keep it, I would suggest going to a phone dealership inside a mall... You will pay alot more, but it useally is good quality..... Average really good phone here with all the fancy buttons and things will cost you around P 30,000........

Another note::: cell phones are like gold here. Dont lay it on a counter to check you bag or get something. Dont let stranger ask to use it for a emergency. ( Just say you dont have one, or NO, or offer to give him 5 peso to use landline) Dont have it out in a crowd unless you really need to.

here in Cebu, if you happen to visit the Lapu-Lapu shrine (historical site in Mactan island), you can buy cheap ladies accessories/native products as cheap as Php20.00 - 50.00 each for a necklace (they are open 7 days a week and til late each night). If you are into guitars, Cebu is also famous for the good quality guitars, just make sure you visit the Pajac guitar street also in Mactan for comparison in prices between the different factories (it can also be nice to watch workers make the different kinds of guitars in these places.
